Four years ago, Parliament voted to take us to war, despite the biggest protest movement ever seen in this country, when two million marched. Since then, there has been virtually no debate in parliament, and no opportunity to vote against the war and occupation.
On 20 March 2007, the fourth anniversary of the Iraq invasion, Stop the War coalition will be hosting a People’s Assembly on the debate that parliament won't have. MPs, US politicians, experts, campaigners and other witnesses will discuss the Iraq war and its consequences. The assembly will be open to all and we welcome and encourage trade union, faith, community and political bodies to send delegates to take part in this event.
The British Anti war movement represented by the Muslim Association of Britain, the Stop the War Coalition and CND have been following the events surrounding the abduction of the group of peace activists in Iraq, including British citizen Norman Kember, with growing concern. What was hoped to be an incident ending in a quick release of the hostages is gradually developing into one that could result in dire consequences. The movement wishes to confirm that Mr Kember is a well known member of the anti war effort and took part in the dozen or so demonstrations held in protest against the war and occupation of Iraq and is therefore a friend of the Iraqi people and a supporter of their struggle for freedom and sovereignty. In an effort to secure the safe release of Mr Kember and his group, the anti war movement will be sending one of its leading figures, Mr Anas Altikriti, to Iraq tomorrow to attempt to appeal directly for the safe and immediate release of the group. The movement acknowledges that this is far from a safe or guaranteed mission, but we hope that Mr. Altikriti's mission will have a successful conclusion.

JOINT STATEMENT

FROM SHEFFIELD STOP THE WAR COALITION & SHEFFIELD TRADES COUNCIL regarding policing of G8 protests

Following the protests called by Sheffield Stop the War Coalition against the G8 meeting of Justice and Interior ministers, we have a number of serious concerns about the way in which these events were policed.

Firstly representatives of Sheffield Stop the War Coalition invested a significant amount of time and effort in negotiating with the police not only about the route and location(s) of the protests, but initially about the right to protest at all.

The police repeatedly tried to prevent our right to be seen or heard anywhere in the vicinity of the G8 ministers, offering instead to pen us into Devonshire Green.

When permission was eventually given, our right to protest was repeatedly hampered by the police. This was compounded by the fact we had to negotiate with police from at least five different forces across the country, who appeared incapable of communication with each other - though we suspect that this was probably a deliberate strategy to keep groups of protesters to small numbers.

In order to participate in the legally agreed protests, people had to repeatedly explain themselves to the police who blocked all access to the protests.

On Saturday 11 June, we had 1000 people on the streets of Sheffield as before - without incident. The decision of the police to restrict the protests on the Wednesday 15 & Thursday 16 June caused a great deal of confusion and frustration.

We reject the terms 'official' & 'unofficial' protests that have been used in the press following police press statements. What Sheffield Stop the War Coalition sought to do was to organise the biggest possible united protest in sight and earshot of the G8 ministers.

We will not have our movement stamped with the terms 'good' and 'bad' protesters simply because they are arbitrarily granted access by the police to one particular area of our city centre.

The point is that we have a legal right to voice our opposition to the murderous men from the G8 and our democratic right to do so was consistently undermined. This raises grave concerns in the context of basic freedoms and civil liberties in a democratic society.

The record of the Stop the War Coalition both locally and nationally is second to none. We have repeatedly organised the biggest demonstrations ever seen and they have always been peaceful. To then employ provocative and heavy handed policing is an unacceptable attack on our civil liberties.

Furthermore, we demand to know police numbers and the cost of this policing operation. As we fear that this government has spent many millions of pounds restricting our rights.

The leaders of the city council should be accountable to those that have elected them. It is not good enough therefore for Jan Wilson to state on the night of Thursday 16 June to the restricted protest at the Cutler's Hall that 'We all have our jobs to do.'

Thanks to everyone who joined the June 11 march - it was a fantastic demo - 1000 people marched: for information regarding Wednesday and Thursday see G8 briefing on the right of this page. We got very good coverage on Look North on the Saturday night. And also thanks to those who attempted to join the protests on the Wednesday & Thursday - we made our voices heard despite the heavy handed policing.

DEMONSTRATE AT THE G8 JUSTICE & INTERIOR MINISTERS' BANQUETS, Wednesday 15th June 2005, ASSEMBLE 6.30pm, Outside the Lyceum Theatre. Thursday 16th June, assemble 6.30pm At the Cathedral Tram Stop (please see briefing on the right for more details)

MAKE POVERTY HISTORY, MAKE WAR HISTORY

Between June 15-17 G8 Interior and Justice Ministers will be meeting in Sheffield. Some of the loudest cheerleaders of the 'war on terror' will be meeting to disscuss its further prosecution and its impact at home. Sheffield Stop the War Coalition have called for a demonstration, to send a clear message that these people are not welcome here.

Route of March:
The march moves off from Devonshire Green into Division Street, right into Carver Street, left into Charter Square , left into Furnival Gate, left into Pinstone Street, right into Surrey Street, left into Norfolk Street, right into Arundel Gate, into Furnival Square, into Eyre Street, right into Cumberland Street, left into South Lane, into London Road, right into Boston Street, left into Cemetry Road and into Cemetry Road Park (entrance Montague Street) to join the Peace in the Park Festival.

Support for March:
Sheffield Stop the War Coalition, Stop Political Terror, Sheffield Muslim Association of Britain, Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Sheffield Trades Council, Sheffield Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, Sheffield Green Party, Sheffield RESPECT

Speakers at Peace in the Park (12.30pm) include:
Martin Mabanga (former Guantanamo Bay detainnee) and Dr Adnan Siddiqui (Stop Political Terror/ Free Babar Ahmad), Suzy Wylie (National Union of Students NEC - personal capacity)

PROTESTS CALLED AS G8 MINISTERS DINE IN SPLENDOUR, 15th & 16th June 2005

Sheffield Stop the War Coalition has called for protests on 15th and 16th June, 6.30pm. Thursday's Sheffield Star, has revealed that G8 Ministers will be dining at the Winter Gardens on June 15th and at Cutler's Hall on June 16th. A spokesperson for Sheffield Stop the War Coalition said,

'It is sickening that the G8 leaders will be banqueting in splendour whilst it has been revealed that child malnutrition in Iraq has actually doubled from 4%-8% as a result of the war in Iraq'

UPDATE 04/06/05: Sheffield Stop the War Coalition yesterday released this press statement by its chairwoman, Lucinda Wakefield. It is in response to safety fears raised by South Yorkshire Police.

"Sheffield Stop the War Coalition has organised demonstrations of thousands of people - in fact the biggest protests of the last few years. On not one of those occasions has anyone come to any harm.

The same goes for protests organised by the other organisations supporting June 11th: Sheffield Palestine Solidarity Campaign, Sheffield Muslim Association of Britain, Sheffield Trades Council, Stop Political Terror, Sheffield CND, Sheffield RESPECT, and Sheffield Green Party.

On June 11th we hope to see thousands on the streets of Sheffield once again, this time taking up the message to the G8 leaders that they should 'Fight Poverty Not War'. Negotiations with the police have gone smoothly to organise this protest. As usual we will be providing a team of our own stewards to ensure the safety of the marchers and the route is agreed.

It is a great shame, therefore, that we still have no clear agreement from the South Yorkshire police for our planned protests on Wednesday 15th at the Winter Gardens & Thursday 16th June at Cutler's Hall. In fact it is looking likely that they will not allow our protests.

We want to make our voices heard to the G8 ministers, we would like to be seen by them. Last July Sheffield City Council passed a motion of concern regarding Gunatanamo detainees. One of the men named was Martin Mabanga. Mr Mabanga will address the 'Peace in the Park' festival which will take place at the end of the June 11th march.

Sheffield Stop the War Coalition considers it to be an insult to Martin Mabanga that when the G8 ministers meet in this city on the 15th & 16th of this month we will not be able to hold them accountable for human right's abuses that are taking place under the name of the 'War on Terror'.

We believe Alberto Gonzales, who will be attending from the US, to be one of the people directly responsible for what has taken place at Guantanamo Bay.

In a city where even the council voted against the war in Iraq we consider it of vital importance that we raise our voices to some of the ministers concerned, and show that the movemement of February 15th 2003 is still on the streets today.

It is not good enough for us to be penned in on Devonshire Green where they cannot hear us. It would be an abuse of our civil liberties, and a great shame in a city that has a proud record of standing up for peace & justice.

We are currently seeking legal advice, on this possible ban which does not even seem to concur with the law, as outlined by the Council's Chief Executive on Wednesday at the full meeting of Sheffield City Council. We shall not be silenced.

Sheffield Stop the War Coalition calls on all of our supporters to come in your hundreds to the demonstration next Saturday. Spend this week telling your classmates, work collegues, friends and family to meet on Devonshire Green at 10.30am on Saturday. It is our strength of numbers that can keep the pressure up on the police and Sheffield City Council, to ensure that we will have the right to protest on the Wednesday & Thursday."

=== No More Bush Wars- Demonstrate 19.03.05===

In his inaugural speech and State of the Union Address Bush sounded as gung-ho as ever, he now has Iran and Syria in his sights. The war and occupation of Iraq has left 100,000 dead (figure from ''The Lancet''), and the bloodshed will continue as long as the troops remain.
